Why we need stronger Sciences To put it bluntly, Britain needs a strong high tech sector, and needs it fast. We're a nation with a dangerously nebulous economic foundation. Gone are the days of Big Industry in this country, of coal mines and steel foundries. Our GDP is now built on the sand of the City - so fickle and shifting - and the Consumer Culture we're all part of. Across the pond, the story is different. The US dominates the world's tech market, closely followed by Japan and Korea. Its pharma sector (not the most ethical of industries, true) is a behemoth of world medicine production. It has the strongest genetics research (and the money to fund it), and its entrepreneurs are taking privatized space exploration and mining as a serious proposition. Britain does have its tech stars - Dyson, and the weapons manufacturers BAE Systems - but they are few and far between. While we had something of a digital Renaissance in the 70s and 80s, our latest computational forays have been quieter (an exception being made for the Raspberry Pi, which is important in a very different way). But, as a country, we have a wonderful technological and scientific tradition - perhaps the strongest in the world: Charles Darwin, Crick and Watson, Alan Turing, Alexander Fleming, them and more. As a country we were responsible for a breathtaking array of breakthroughs. Yet, while interest in hard sciences and Maths has risen slightly over the past few years (at A level), it's a long way from becoming the strong sector we need it to be. The answer, as with many world issues, lies in education. We need to enliven our kids to the spirit of science, get them captivated by it, and most importantly, invest in it as a subject and in them as individuals. Good progress has been made by Brian Cox and co., but the education system is still lacking the drive, structure and funds to follow that motivation through. Education is the ultimate investment. A strong science and tech industry starts with strong science and Maths education. If we want to reclaim our position at the forefront of discovery, build a firm economic foundation and jostle with the US, India and China in the Final Frontier, we're going to have to invest in scientific education. In short, if we're going to keep our position as a world player, we're going to need more than just a nation of fund managers, business analysts and credit controllers. Socially Inept Networking Some time ago my boss wanted me to get involved in Social-Networking sites. He said this is where the marketing of the present and the future is taking place. I prefer the telephone myself. Oh oh, one more time where I have to enter a world I’m not familiar with. School was the other world I was not familiar with. I do know how to use a computer to do many things, but putting my life up on an internet billboard is not one I was ever moved to do. Does this mean I’m going to have to join MyFace or SpaceBook? Hey, who I am, what I like, and where I’m going is none of your business. Or is it? People seem to want to tell everyone else what they like these days. I understand that young people spend more time online than off it. In fact more and more people seem to have more friends they’ve never met than ones they have, including me now! I wonder… When people get addicted to the internet, do the support groups hold online meetings? Being an older person I thought I should do my homework first (Wikipedia). There are well over 300 sites listed as “notable” social networking sites. Those are the popular ones. On the other hand only 14 sites are listed as defunct. Those are awfully good odds. Sounds like a good business to be in. According to eBizMBA as of February the top Social-Networking sites are Facebook with over ¾ million users, number two is Twitter at over ¼ million, and in third place is LinkedIn counting over 100,000 members. Interestingly Pinterest has moved up a couple places to the fourth most popular site just behind Linkedin. What I find interesting about that is Pinterest is mostly a site of images or at least appears that way to me. One site I really enjoy is Pearltree. In Peartree you place any kind of information you want, logs, blogs, or images, you name it, everything gets placed in little pearls that when created remind me of a binary tree in computer science or nodes in graph theory in higher mathematics. And in Perltrees people can join together and create their own community of stuff. Anyway, if you haven’t figured it out yet, I know nothing about Social Networking. But hey, I’m learning! Now mind your own business. Oh wait a minute…… did I just post this on MyFace?

Next, pencil-sketch each piece in a notebook so that you can enter your values into that sketch rather than marking up the original pattern.No need to worry about your drawing skills; what matters are the measurements you will record on your sketches.Find good sewing courses here.Let’s suppose you want to make a pair of trousers, only because trousers are the most intricate articles of clothing to measure.First, lay them flat on the table to measure the waistband.You might consider pinning your tape measure to one si de of the fly and around the waistband, as needed.While they are still laying flat on the table, take your hip measurement at the trousers’ widest partNow, measure from just below the waistband to the crotch point.Next, measure the inseam â€" from the crotch point to the hemand then, the outer seam: from the bottom of the waistband to the hem.Flip the trousers over to measure the widest part of the seat.You should also measure the hips again and you will measure again from the bottom of the waistband to the crotch point.Now fold the trousers in half so that the crotch point is visible. Again measure just below the waistband and across the top of the thigh portion.Invert your fold and measure again, from the side seam to the fold.You will also measure the arc from the waistband to the crotch point. For this, you should have a French curve, always recording those values onto your sketch. This completes measuring your trousers.Measuring a blouse or other top works on the same princip le.You will measure the neckline, the bust, the distance from shoulder to shoulder and shoulder to hem, from underarm to hem and the armhole, again using the French curve.It is critical that you do not round any of your measurements.If you add so much as an eighth of an inch to your hip measurement, for example, you are adding a full half-inch to the overall measurement!As long as you’re going this far, why not learn how to make your own patterns? With tailor’s chalk in hand, mark your revised measurements directly onto the cloth.Compare your ideal measurements those on the pattern. If your waist measure exceeds that of the pattern, simply add the extra length you will need to make the trousers fit you.And so you go, comparing each pattern piece to the measurements you’ve made, adding fractions of inches as needed.You might wonder what to do about seam allowances.The average seam allowance is five-eights of an inch or 1.58cm. So, as you go through your pattern, don’t forget to add that extra measure when you do your calculations.Here is an example: the original pattern specifies a distance of 20 centimetres from the hip to the centre on th e back panel of the garment and your measurement is 21.2 cm.You cannot simply add 1.2 centimetres to the pattern’s measures; remember that you will have two such panels, meaning that your additional width will be doubled. You must divide that extra 1.2 cm to ensure the proper fit.Now, add your seam allowance: 0.6cm+1.58cm+1.58cm = 3.22cm. (Note: both sides of the panels have seam allowances, that is why you add 1.58 twice).You should also look into pattern-making basics, whether for fashion design or to add embellishment to your existing wardrobe.Consider a SloperBefore you tuck yourself behind your sewing machine, we present another sewing hack: create a sloper.The garment industry makes ample use of slopers to make clothes that are all the same size. Slopers for industrial use are called blocks; there are slopers/blocks for tops, trousers skirts.You might think of a sloper as a stencil of your measurements.Unlike a pattern, a sloper will not incorporate any style or embellishmen ts such as ruffles, darts or pleats. There will be no sewing directions or other markings, and no seam allowances.Your sloper can be used to resize other patterns; you can also use it to create patterns of your own.In fact, you could design and create an entire wardrobe for yourself with just three slopers: a top, a trouser and a skirt sloper; and you only need that last one if you are mad for wearing skirts and dresses.As long as you already have a precise set of measurements, why not measure your best-fitting blouse for your shirt sloper and, if you have one, a pencil skirt for your skirt sloper.That doesn’t mean you will forever wear only pencil skirts. Introvert Whisperer / Some Times Who You Are Authentically Dictates Your Best Path - Introvert Whisperer Some Times Who You Are Authentically Dictates Your Best Path Have you ever noticed that there is never just one way to solve a problem to get to a goal?  Granted, I think there are oftentimes solutions that are considered “standard” but we all know that when you give it more thought, there are alternatives.  It’s easy to fall into the trap of taking a path that most people go simply to save a few brain cells coming up with something different.   The problem with taking the road most other people take is that it may not be the best road for you.   As an introvert, I’ve had to devise alternative strategies to many situations to ensure the kind of outcome I wanted in order to avoid a world of discomfort.  I call them “alternative” because with such things like networking, I had to do it in a way that worked with my personality â€" or said another way â€" “how I function”.  The alternative is due to the fact that the standard approach to things like networking didn’t work for me so a different route was taken.   Your career and each day at work is a series of challenges met by solutions.  When you’re stumped, a good thing to do is to see how other people solve those same issues.  I’d say that’s a pretty good approach. However, you’ll also notice that sometimes a solution for one person is not a solution for you or you try their solution and discover it didn’t work.   When you have poor results or even failure trying something that worked so well for someone else, it hurts your self-esteem.  It can leave you feeling like there is something wrong with you. I get it; I’ve had those reactions. I have found, however, that your career (and your life) is not a “one-size-fits-all” and what works for someone else may not work for you or me.  There is no need to let your self-esteem get damaged.   Find another way.   If you have a challenge in your career you need to know there is a solution.  In fact, there’s more than one solution or path to a satisfying conclusion.
